Venue:
Florence (Italy)

The Fondazione Internazionale Menarini, ever since its first conference, has focused its activities on the most advanced aspects of Medicine and Biology. To celebrate the XXV anniversary of its foundation, it returns to the theme of the opening symposium, held in Florence in October 1976, "The responsibility of science in modern society": the conference will be held in Florence on November 16 and 17, 2000, and proposes to offer a view in perspective of the revolution that completion of the human genome project can bring, within the sphere of medical science, to the understanding and treatment of the most widespread pathologies that threaten mankind, and to the improvement of the quality of life. The conference will consist of a series of lectures on themes that range from cardiovascular pathologies to the prevention and treatment of tumors, up to genetically determined diseases, in the awareness that completion of the human genome project stands, on the one hand, as the highest goal achieved by science at the end of the millennium, and on the other, as the starting point for a new, fascinating voyage of man and science towards the full knowledge of his own nature.
