Cardiovascular diseases still represent the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Their occurrence is largely determined by the presence of risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, hypercolesterolemia, etc) which must be actively sought, identified and corrected. Epidemiological data, however, show that incidence and prevalence of the main risk factors are increasing in the general population. The present meeting has been organized with the purpose of allowing a thorough discussion about the present situation, including the results which have been obtained so far in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases through the correction of the global cardiovascular risk. Particular attention will be devoted to the identification of new organizational models, involving not only specialized centers and general practitioners, but also the patients themselves. The group of experts will also discuss about the perspectives of research, with the aim of early diagnosis and better treatment, on the basis of healthy lifestyles and an appropriate use of old and new drugs. The Workshop is for everyone involved or interested in the field, and will be held in Pietrasanta, old and noble city, close to the sea, renowed for its art and culture. Pietrasanta will represent an ideal environment for allowing a discussion and a critical evaluation of the most recent and scientifically correct aspects of a topic which is of fundamental importance for public health.
