The Congress of the Italian Society of Hypertension will be enriched in 2016 with a major international event. For the first time Italian arterial hypertension specialists will join specialists of the National Hypertension Societies of Slovenia, Croatia and Greece in the discussion of the latest scientific and clinical issues resulting from recent progress in research. The program of this special international symposium, supported with an unrestricted grant by Fondazione Menarini, includes important topics such as the need to re-think hypertension management in light of recent meta-analyses and of the most recent trials. In this context the meeting will anticipate the contents of an incoming position paper of the European Society of Hypertension, with a “reappraisal” of the latest ESH / ESC hypertension Guidelines published in 2013. During the symposium there will also be a session highlighting recent progress on home self-measurement of blood pressure, while other sessions will address some of the “hot” issues being currently discussed in cardiovascular medicine, such as the role of uric acid in cardiovascular risk assessment, the cardiovascular effects of obstructive sleep-apnea, the clinical significance of an increase in the rigidity of the large arterial vessels, the complex link between erectile dysfunction and impaired endothelial function, the management of arterial hypertension in the elderly and very elderly patient, and finally the management of hypertensive individuals suffering from major comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and renal failure. The discussion of these issues in the prestigious frame of an international symposium will offer participants a unique opportunity for an in-depth update on the currently debated new perspectives in the management of high blood pressure and in the reduction of the associated cardiovascular risk.
